Elfi Lee is born in 1940 and lives a picture-perfect life on a quiet acreage in eastern Germany. She delights in heading to the forest with her mother, Mutti, who sings hymns as the two gather boysenberries in a basket. Free to roam on the farm, four-year-old Elfi is adventurous and dreams only of exploring more each day.

As 1944 draws to a close, shadows of war creep onto the acreage. Mutti and Elfi encounter a Russian soldier on their property, her father is drafted into the Germany army, and rumors rage of an approaching enemy. On a snowy day in January 1945, as artillery fires in the distance, Elfi flees with her family to escape the advancing Red Army. They board a train headed west, destination unknown.

Now Elfi's dreams of exploring are dashed, and she longs only to hide in Mutti's arms when the journey is interrupted by air raids. After a treacherous trip west, during which Mutti assures Elfi the angels are with them, the family arrives in a suburb of Hamburg. When Elfi's father returns unexpectedly after the war, the family is thrilled. Soon, however, the daily grind of post-war Germany sets in. Food is short, and so is spiritual nourishment, as it is hard for the family to worship freely. When an offer to come to America and live near a Lutheran church arises, the family accepts. But after a journey across the sea, Elfi will need to find out if a better life and true adventure can indeed be found.

Major purchase! Builds muscle

I've had a Miele for 14 years before the powerhead burned up. Decided to invest in a new one as 225 for a powerhead was a gamble on one that old. I like to use a vacuum rather than a dust mop, and I have carpet as well. Did a bit of research and decided this one was the one for me. I did keep my old swivel parquet floor attachment as it fits. haven't used the floor head that came with this one much, so jury is still out. The new powerhead is HEAVY. Takes a while to learn to maneuver it well, but it really gets the deep pile carpet cleaner. Love the longer cord and hose. Overall, happy with the Miele Guard1. The only reason for the 4 stars is because it does take muscle to work the powerhead. Quieter than my old one, which is pleasing to husband.

The Miele Guard L1 Bagged Canister Vacuum Cleaner is the Porsche of vacuum cleaners. I have owned numerous vacuum cleaners over the years. This Miele Guard L1 tops them all. My last vacuum cleaner was an Electrolux canister vacuum cleaner, excellent vacuum which still works after 20 years, but not even close "especially the suction power" to this new Miele Guard L1 Bagged Canister Vacuum cleaner. Let's hope it last as long as the Electrolux.

Expensive but worth it. I used to buy Kenmore's like this and had to take them in every two years to get fixed. The vacuum guy in our town told me that I was wasting money because the Meile (Rhymes with Sheila he said) was so much sturdier and lasted so much longer. I bought the lower end Meile and have never gone back. That first model lasted 10 years with no problems and I traded it in for the model C. That has lasted 20 years and needed work as my kids weren't as respectful with it as they should. I just bought this newer model due to reviews and I am very satisfied. I was able to find a new model that had the box bumped and crumpled. The vacuum is completely fine. The suction is dreamy, the power cord that turns on the rug attachment is encased in the wand so dog hair doesn't get tangled in it. My single wish is that there were more metal parts as plastic ages and cracks. Metal would increase weight. My engineer husband is totally satisfied and looks for opportunities to vacuum. Hard to be mad about that! 😉

I can only offer one star for this review. The vacuum looks nice, comes with a hose, floor attachments and an extendable wand. However, it smelled really bad because it was full of debris. The bag has a nice flapper on the input port, which is good because otherwise all the debris would have come out in transit. The unit and floor attachments appear well built and are surprisingly light weight even when crammed full of hair. The color looked nice underneath the dirt in the plastic bag. Unfortunately, I did not get to use this one because the person before me already did --- extensively. I would rate higher if I did not have to return this one and try again for a new unit. Therefore too early to know if this can be recommended or not.
